Information Processing Flashcards
Define input
the five senses and how you perceive them
3 parts of a simple model of information processing
Input, decision making, output
Identify and describe the 3 stages of decision making
- stimulus identification (sense organs detect and recognise info
- response selection (decide how to respond)
- response programming (selecting a response)
Define perception
The process of acquiring info and making sense if it
Define proprioception
Info provided by the internal environment regarding the movement of our body in space
Define kinaesthesis
A sense that gives the brain info about the contraction of muscles, tendons and joints
Describe the DCR process that occurs during perception
DETECTION: detect stimulus from display
COMPARISON: compare stimuli coming in to previous experiences from memory
RECOGNITION: find a corresponding situation
3 stages of perception
- vision
- auditory
- proprioception
Characteristics of short term memory
- up to 30 seconds
- 5 to 9 chunks
- decisions made here
What is chunking (and what is its purpose)
Chunking is breaking up long pieces of information into smaller parts (makes it easier to. Interpret and remember)
How does practise improve memory
Strengthens the S-R bond
What is mental rehearsal and how effective is it?
Involves using all senses to recreate a skill or image in the mind
Helps to:
- improve skills
- boosts confidence
- improve performance
Define reaction time
The time it takes from start of stimulus to the start of the response
Define movement time
Time it takes from the start of the reaction to the end of the reaction
Define response time
Reaction time + movement time
Start of stimulus to the end of the response
