Information Processing Flashcards
What is Chomsky’s criteria for evaluating language?
observational, descriptive, and explanatory adequacy
what is observational adequacy?
grammar should specify what utterances are acceptable and not acceptable in a language
what is descriptive adequacy?
grammar should specify how different utterances are related
what is explanatory adequacy?
grammar should explain language aquisition
Chomsky’s principles and parameters theory (PPT)?
states rules of language in much more general form
what type of transformation does PPT suggest?
one type, move-alpha (moving some element of sentence)
how does PPT help overcome concerns about TG?
- fewer transformations
- innate knowledge can be represented as parameters
what is the derivational theory of complexity (chomsky)?
- assume in comprehension, start with surface structure & end with deep structure
- more transformations →longer time to process
what is involved in the information processing model?
- sensory memory
- working memory
- long term memory
what is sensory memory?
- input from senses encoded into memory system
- large capacity, short duration
what is working memory?
- temporary storage and information processing
- involved in language processing
- limited capacity and duration
what is long-term memory?
- includes different subsystems or different types of memories
- unlimited capacity, very long duration
what are language processing levels?
top down and bottom up processing
what is top down processing?
allows higher levels to influence lower levels
what is bottom up processing?
relies on info from the environments processing, proceeds from lower levels to higher
