What do you use to describe the physical landscape
• Relief - Look for areas of high and low ground to get an idea of the shape of the land
• Landforms - Look for spurs, valleys, steep and gentle slopes, convex and concave slopes, ridges, and saddles
• Drainage - Looking at which way rivers flow will give some indication of the slope of the land
What can rural settlements be described as
Dispersed (usually a farm) or nucleated (number of people live close together)
Describe the shape of urban settlements
Roughly circular unless affected by relief
What is the location of a rural settlement determined by
The basic needs of its inhabitants
What is rural land used for
Mainly farming
What will be present if there is animal farming
Fences, dams, reservoirs and wind pumps
What will be present if there is crop farming
Cultivated land
What will be present for irrigation farming
Canals or furrows leading from dams, rivers, or reservoirs to the cultivated land

Timber plantations
