Information Flashcards
What are the two types of immunity?
Natural immunity - it is present at birth.
Acquired immunity - develops after exposure to pathogens or after vaccination/immunisation.
What is the passive response of plants to prevent pathogens from entering?
Thick bark of woody plants, closely packed epidermal cells, waxy cuticle, and chemical secretions that are poisonous to many organisms.
What is the active response of plants when infected?
Releases chemical compounds such as salicylic acid and unaffected cells produce various chemical defences.
What is the passive response of animals to prevent pathogens from entering?
A multi-layered skin, antiseptic tears, mucus lined air passages, enzymes in saliva, ear wax, and hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
What is the active response of animals when infected?
White blood corpuscles produce antibodies to fight diseases and inflammation occurs in infected areas.
