Informal Agency of Social Control - Workplace Flashcards
Workplace as informal agency of social control
Workers are socialised into informal rules that underpin work
such as the Duties and Obligations associated with the role and status of being a worker
Feminism
Social control is enforced through fear of losing jobs and wanting promotions
Especially relevant for women
- Have to work harder than men to get promotions for higher salaries
-To be on equal pay as a man in the same/similar role
Better roles within the company
-Mainly male dominated
Easier for men to get promotions, thus social control is less important for men
-less to fear
(-) Weakness for Feminism
- Doesn’t take age, ethnicity or class into consideration
- Generalises the idea that men have higher paid jobs and higher roles in most businesses when this may not be the case for many companies
Durkheim
Functionalism
integration
Durkheim says the professional association integrates individual members into an occupational group
Through training and code of conduct, social control is kept
(-) Functionalism
Doesn’t look after the root of how social control is really kept and why it sometime may not be followed
