Influence Of Early Attachment Flashcards
1
Q
Internal working model (IWM)
A
- The mental representation we all carry with us of our attachment to our primary caregiver. They are important in affecting our future relationships because they carry our perception of what relationships are like
2
Q
Relationships in later childhood
A
- Attachment types is associated with the quality of peer relationships in childhood
- Securely attached infants tend to go on to form the best quality childhood friendships, whereas insecurely attached infants later have friendship difficulties
- Bullying behaviour can be predicted by attachment type. Secure children were very unlikely to be involved in bullying. Avoidant children were most likely to be the victims, and resistant children were most likely to be bullies

Q
Hazan and Shaver- love quiz
A
- This was based on a quiz of nearly 100 questions that was published in a newspaper
- They analysed 620 replies to the ‘love quiz’ printed in a local newspaper. The quiz had 3 sections:
1) Assessing respondents’ current or more significant relationship
2) General love experiences
3) Assessing attachment type by responding to one of three statements
Out of 620 replied:
- 56% classified themselves as secure
- 25% avoidant
- 19% resistant
Love experience and attitudes towards love (internal working model) were related to attachment type
Those were securely attached: believed love is enduring, had mutual trust and were less likely to get divorced
Those who were insecurely attached: felt love was rare, fell in and out of love easily, found relationships less easy, were most likely to be divorced

Q
Bailey et al (2007)- relationships in adulthood as a parent
A
- They considered the attachment of 99 mothers to their babies and to their own mother
- Mother-baby attachment was assessed using the strange situation and mother-own attachment was assessed using an adult attachment interview
- The majority of women had the same attachment classification both to their babies and their own mothers
