Inflorescence Flashcards
Some terms, definitions, types
Acropetal
Older flower lies towards base and younger flower lies towards apex.
Centripetal (manner)
Older flowers lies towards the periphery and younger flowers lies towards the centre.
Racemose Inflorescence
In racemose inflorescence, there is indefinite or unlimited growth of floral axis and flowers are developed either in acropetal or in centripetal manner.
Type of Racemose Inflorescence
On the basic of floral axis, on the basic of flowers and their arrangement, it is of following type:
1) Raceme
2) Spike
3) Spikelet
4) Catkin
5) Spadix
6) Corymb
7) Head or Capitulum.
Raceme
Elongated floral axis bearing pedicilate flower in acropetal succession makes Raceme Inflorescence.
Spike
Elongated floral axis bearing sessile flower in acropetal succession makes Spike Inflorescence.
Spikelet
Reduced spike having less developed flowers or florates which is surrounded by a pair of sterile glumes makes Spikelet Inflorescence.
Catkin
Weak and Pendulous floral axis bearing unisexual sessile flower in acropetal succession makes catkin inflorescence.
Spadix
Elongated and thickened floral axis bearing sessile, reduced flowers or florates arranged in acropetal succession and surrounded by one to many coloured spathe makes Spadix Inflorescence.
Corymb
It is a special type of Raceme in which the size of pedicles goes on decreasing towards the apex so that the flowers are brought on the same level makes Corymb Inflorescence.
Head Or Capitulum
It is a special type of racemose inflorescence in which the floral axis is flattened, convex or concave type on which reduced flowers or florates are arranged in centripetal succession. These florates are surrounded by green, leafy involucre of bract to form head or capitulum inflorescence.
