Inflammation I Flashcards
What is inflammation?
A response stimuli that can potentially cause your body harm
What are the FIVE cardinal signs of inflammation?
Redness Heat Swelling Pain Loss of function
Outline the time scale of inflammation (3)
Onset
Resolution
Post resolution
What is pattern recognition?
Recognition of alien pathogens via PRRs
PRRs - pattern recogniton receptors e.g. TLRs (toll like receptors)
Respond to PAMPs (pathogen associated molecular patterns)
What is the role of sentinel cells in an inflammatory response?
Group of cells which are responsible for the release of cytokines
What do mast cells do?
Responsible for the release of pro inflammatory mediators such as histamine
Outline the vascular events that occur in an inflammatory response (2)
Vasodilation
Increased vascular permeability
What do leukocytes do?
Engulf, kill and digest micro-organisms
What happens in the resolution of inflammation?
Healing
What occurs in the failure of resolution?
Chronic inflammation
- persistence in inflammatory trigger
- ongoing presence of inflammatory macrophages
- failure to establish adaptive immunity
Give FIVE examples of unwanted inflammatory responses
Hayfever Asthma Rheumatoid arthritis Atherosclerosis Contact dermatitis
What are cytokines?
Signalling molecules responsible for the modulation of other cells in the inflammatory response
What are chemokines?
A type of cytokine which controls leukocyte migration
What is the role of histamine? (2)
Acts on H1 receptors
- constricts GI and bronchial smooth muscle
- dilates blood vessels
What class of drug is montelukast?
Leukotriene receptor antagonist
