Signs and symptoms of Appendicitis?
RLQ pain
dull pain around the navel
Signs and symptoms of pancreatitis?
epigastric pain radiating to the back and left flank or left shoulder
Signs and symptoms of bowel perforation?
severe pain all over the abdomen
Signs and symptoms of diverticulitis?
LLQ pain
Signs and symptoms of lower GI bleed and cirrhosis?
Abdominal pain and distention
signs and symptoms of other acute abdominal pain?
N/V
diarrhea
constipation
tachycardia
What are the nursing interventions for acute abdominal pain?
Pain control!!
Most patients will be on an NPO diet
What are the clinical manifestations of appendicitis?
RLQ dull pain around the navel (point of McBurney’s)
loss of appetite
N/V
spiked fever
want to be in fetal position
in extreme pain, nothing alleviates
if pain suddenly stops = appendix has ruptured and abdominal cavity needs to be washed out
What diagnostics are used for appendicitis?
CT: shows inflammation
Blumburg’s sign: rebound tenderness
What are the priority interventions for appendicitis?
NO pain meds (pain needs to be evaluated)
go to OR for appendectomy
DON’T give laxatives, enemas, opioids, or heat bc it increases the risk for rupture
What are the complications associated with the rupture of the appendix?
peritonitis
increased HR, RR, temp
rigid board-like abdomen
What should you educate your patient about after the appendectomy?
There will be excessive drainage bc irrigation is used in surgery to wash out the abdominal cavity
