What is the definition of infertility?
A couple with 1 year regular intercourse
without use of contraception and no pregnancy.
What are possible treatments against infertility?
Treatment depends on the cause.
Surgery, hormonal treatment, artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization are possible treatments.
What are indications for IVF as treatment against infertility?
Tubal infertility.
Endometriosis.
Long-term unexplained infertility.
Slightly or moderately reduced sperm quality.
Other treatment trials without success, failed.
What are indication for IVF + ICSI?
Ejaculated sperm:
Significantly reduced sperm quality.
Low/no fertilization in IVF.
Sperm antibodies.
What are possible complications of infertility treatment?
Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHS).
Bleeding.
Infection.
Multiple pregnancies (e.g. twins).
What are indications for banking of oocytes and sperm?
Sperm: Before cancer treatment, problems with ejaculation.
Oocytes: Before cancer treatment, as long as there is no risk of cancer cell transfer.
What type of fertilization is required if preimplantation genetic diagnostics will be performed?
IVF + ICSI.
Is it possible to get preimplantation genetic diagnosis in Norway?
Couple has to apply for PGD after having had genetic counselling. The application is sent to a ”PGD committee”. Treatment is carried out abroad (Brussels, Stockholm), same refunding as IVF/ICSI.
PGD method is not (yet) available in Norway. (PGS is not (yet) allowed in Norway.)
