Infectious Diseases Flashcards
Infectious Diseases
A disease that is caused when a pathogen is passed from one organism to another.
Pathogens
Are the cause of infectious diseases, bacteria, viruses, protozoans, fungi and parasites.
Disease Reservoir
Is a source of the pathogen in the environment. Reservoirs might be insects, animals, people, or inanimate objects, such as soil.
Human Reservoirs
Main reservoir for pathogens that affect humans.
What is a carrier?
Someone who is symptom-free but capable of passing the pathogen.
Animal Reservoirs
Can also pass to humans, examples are influenza and rabies.
Other Reservoirs
Soil (Bacteria Tetanus), and Contaminated water or food (E.coli)
Symptoms of Disease
The virus multiples in the cells and leaves cells either by exocytosis or by causing the cell to burst. The virus damages the tissue and even kills some cells. Harmful chemicals or toxin might be produce.
Disease Patterns
As outbreaks of diseases spread, certain patterns are observed.
The CDC and the WHO monitor disease patterns to help control the spread.
Antibiotics
A substance that can kill or inhibit the growth of other microorganisms, peniccillium, erythromycin, neomycin, and gentamicin.
