Infectious Diseases Flashcards
All viruses have protein coat or shell surrounding thier genome. Name it.
Capsid
The genome of a virus contains______or______. And it can either be______stranded or______standed.
- RNA or DNA
* Single-stranded or Double-stranded
What is a naked capsid virus?
It does not contain an envelope
What 2 types of nucelocapsid due viruses form
icosahedron or helix
Are viruses with envelopes more or less susceptible to environmental drying or chemical disruptions?
More susceptible
Name the 8 phases of virus replication. Starting from attachement and ending with budding/lysis. When does the Eclipse phase occur? What is the Eclipse Phase?
Attachement Penetration Uncoating - eclipse phase begins because the virus can not be seen. Synthesis Translation Replication Assembly Budding or Lysis
What is tropism in virology?
Tropism determines which host cells a virus can infect. It is determined by cell receptors and viral glycoproteins.
What is latency in virology?
Latency is when a virus infects a host cell and becomes quiescent (dormant) with little-to-no genomic replication or protein production.
Name 5 viral disease states
- Acute (flu)
- Acute w/ novel disease manifestations later in life (measles–>SSPE)
- Latent infection (shingles)
- Persistant in Host, but latent with occasional reactivation (herpes)
- Chronic Infection (hepititis, HIV)
What is the process by which a host cell becomes immortalized and potentially cancerous as a result of a viral infection.
