What is dapsone? How does it work? What are its side effects? What do you need to test before giving it?
A
An antimycobacterial. Probably acts through inhibition of folate synthesis. It’s used to treat dermaitis herpetiformis as well as leprosy.
Important unwanted adverse effects: haemolysis (life threatening if G6PD deficient patient), methaemoglobinaemia, anorexia, nausea and vomiting, fever, allergic dermatitis, neuropathy.
