Infectious Disease Info Flashcards
How is Avian Flu spread?
through direct contact with infected poultry, or surfaces and objects contaminated by their feces.
What is Clostridium difficile?
type of bacteria that lives in human and animal intestines, usually as part of normal flora. In response to certain antibiotics, and other medical conditions, C. difficile can proliferate out of control, and cause illness to that person and to others. The bacteria can start
to release toxins that attack the lining of the intestines, and cause diarrhea.
How is C. Difficile transmitted?
Transmission occurs when C. difficile is shed in feces. Any surface, device, or material (e.g., commodes, bathing tubs, and rectal thermometers) that becomes contaminated with feces may serve as a reservoir for the C. difficile spores. The spores are transferred to people by touching a contaminated surface or item.
What is Hep A?
Hepatitis A is an acute liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV), lasting from a few weeks to several months.
What is Hep B?
Hepatitis B is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It ranges in severity from a mild illness, lasting a few weeks (acute), to a serious long-term (chronic) illness that can lead to liver disease or liver cancer.
What is Hep C?
Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). HCV infection sometimes
results in an acute illness, but most often becomes a chronic condition that can lead to cirrhosis
of the liver and liver cancer.
What is H1N1?
Respiratory infection caused by Influenza A viruses.
*Swine flu is a type of H1N1 that is a combination of swine, avian, and human influenza viruses.
What is Meningitis?
An infection of the fluid of the final cord and the fluid that surrounds the brain.
What is MRSA?
Bacterial Staph infection (infection of the skin) that is resistant to some antibiotics.
What is SARS?
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. Illness caused by the Coronavirus.
