What is the best drug to give for a patient with bloody stools, known exposure to salmonella or shigella while studies are pending?
What if either of these bacteria are isolated?
A
Ceftriaxone
If either is confirmed- ampicillin or Bactrim
- only treat severe cases, with salmonella reason to withhold tx is because it results in prolonged carrier state
