Why are females more likely to get UTIS?

A

Because the urethra is much more closer to the anal tract and therefore it’s easier to spread infections.
In females the urethra is much shorter compared to the males

A

Commonly bacteria (usually E. coli from the GI tract) in bladder or urethra

  4. Post-menopausal

  1. Dysuria - burning when peeing
  2. Increased urgency
  3. Lower abdominal discomfort
  4. Pelvic/back pain
  5. Cloudy/bloody urine
  6. Strong smelling urine
  7. Sometimes fever

What are the possible treatments for uncomplicated UTIS?

A

1st line treatment:
Short course of Nitrofurantoin or
Trimethoprim (3 days)

Nitrofurantoin has more side effects but there is more resistance to Trimethoprim
