What is conjunctivitis?
Inflammation the conjunctiva (thin membrane which covers the sclera of the eyes and the inside of the eyelids)
What is the term given when there is involvement of:
1) Cornea
2) Eyelid
in conjunctivitis
1) Corneal involvement = keratoconjunctivitis
2) Eyelid involvement = blepharoconjunctivitis
What are some common causes of conjunctivitis?
1) Viral
2) Bacterial
3) Allergic
What are some causes of bacterial conjunctivitis?
Staph aureus
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Gonococcal
Chlamydial
When does neonatal conjunctivitis usually occur?
“Sticky eyes”
Usually starts day 3-4
How is neonatal conjunctivitis managed?
Swabs usually negative for significant pathogens
Simple cleaning measures sufficient
What does neonatal conjunctivitis within the first 48hrs, with purulent discharge and swelling of the eyelids suggest?
Gonococcal conjunctivitis
How is gonococcal conjunctivitis managed?
Cephalosporin
When does chlamydial conjunctivitis in a newborn present?
First week of life
How is chlamydial conjunctivitis in a newborn diagnosed?
Specific monoclonal antibody test perfumed on conjunctival secretions

Adenovirus
What can acute allergic conjunctivitis cause?
Rapid onset lid swelling
