Reduces presence of microorganisms on surfaces or instruments by removing visible materials to also minimises transfer of microorganisms
What does disinfecting do?
Uses chemicals or heat to reduce non - visible pathogenic microorganisms by destroying the cell wall
What does sterilisation do?
Completely eliminates all microorganisms
What is decontamination?
The process of cleaning, disinfecting + sterilising
What are types of cleaning procedures?
- mops
- vacuum cleaners
- cloth + floor scrubbers
- cleaning agents
What things are applied during sterilisation?
- chemicals
- high pressure
- heat
- irradiation (high energy radiation)
- filtration
What does anti microbial resistance mean?
ability of microorganisms to survive exposure to anti microbial agents (antibiotics)
What is the impact of anti microbial resistance?
- reduced effectiveness of antibiotics as there overused
- new strains of microorganisms
- increase in super bugs
How to reduce anti microbial resistance?
- programs to promote appropriate use of antibiotics
- awareness of overuse
If you were walking down the corridor on the ward and came across blood on the floor what should you do?
-Put appropriate PPE on
- Disinfect + decontaminate the area
