Infection Prevention Flashcards
Study & Master
Define Infection
Pathogenic microorganisms (virus/bacteria/fungi) that multiply and produce toxins within the body.
Define Contamination
A substance that has been introduced to potential pathogens.
Define Pathogen
An organism that propagates/breeds diseases.
Define Organism
Single-celled/Individual living thing/life form (singular plant, animal, etc.).
What are the 4 types of microorganisms
Parasite, Fungi, Bacteria and Viruses
What are the 4 ways of maintaining a sterile environment?
Cleaning, Sanitation, Disinfection, Sterilization
Why is it important for estheticians to be aware of infection prevention?
Having knowledge of infection control is the first step in preventative care; To implement infection control standards in order to retain license; Client satisfaction due to safety and trust;
What would happen in estheticians failed to follow and practice safety standards?
Jeopardizing loosing their clientele and license;
List the different federal/NATIONAL agencies
EPA: Environnemental Protection Agency; OSHA: Occupational Safety & Health Administration; CDC: Centers for disease control and prevention;
What is a main priority of the EPA (Environment Protection Agency) ?
One of this agency’s main priorities is in DISINFECTANTS & directions/labeling of products.
What is a main function of the OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration)?
An agency that focuses on safety in the workplace.
What is a main function of the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) agency?
An agency that SHAPES/influences workplace health & safety standards. They do this as new threats arise, such as COVID19: through practical methods (pertaining to certain circumstances) such as face masks, physical distancing, hand sanitizers, etc.
What are pathogens? What are the different ways pathogens can be transmitted?
Pathogens are organisms that breed disease. Bloodborne and Airborne; Indirect and Direct transmission.
What is Indirect transmission?
Indirect transmission occurs through exposure to equipment, devices or tools that are contaminated.
Ex: Using leftover wax from a client with herpes or an unclean wax strip on a client who does not have herpes.
What is direct transmission?
Occurs when there is human to human contact.
Ex: Obtaining oral herpes through skin to skin contact.
Ex: Contact with blood and/or bodily fluids.
What distinguishes bacteria from other microorganisms?
They are single-cell organisms with cytoplasm.
CDC stands for:
Center for Disease Control and Prevention
How many types of bacteria are there?
Millions
What percentage of research participants listed safety as a barrier to seeking esthetic treatments?
58%
What is not an example of a viral illness?
Strep Throat
AIDS
Flu
Chicken Pox
Strep Throat (local to throat)
What bacteria are often found is stagnant freshwater?
Spirilla
