Infection Control Procedures Flashcards
Explain the concepts and principles of performing infection control procedures
What is the single most effective method of preventing the spread of disease?
Hand washing
What is an aseptic technique?
Refers to practices/procedures that assist in reducing the risk of infection
What are the two types of aseptic techniques?
Medical asepsis (clean technique) and surgical asepsis (sterile technique)
Describe the practice of medical asepsis
Involves procedures used to reduce and prevent the spread of microorganisms. Hand hygiene, using clean gloves, and cleaning the environment routinely are examples of medical asepsis
Describe the practice of surgical asepsis
Includes procedures used to eliminate all microorganisms from an object or area. Prevents contamination of an open wound, isolates the operative area, and maintains a sterile field for surgery
What are the four rules of surgical asepsis?
- Know what is sterile
- Know what is not sterile
- Separate sterile from unsterile
- Remedy contamination immediately
What is the best method of eliminating microorganisms from equipment and supplies?
Sterilization
Sterile + Sterile = what?
Sterile
Sterile + Clean = what?
Contaminated
True or False: do not reach over a sterile field
True
