Sharps, items that drip of saturated blood and or saliva, and hard and soft tissues removed from the patient’s mouth
Safety Data Sheets (SDS) provide what?
the employee with information regarding the hazards of chemicals utilized in the office and how to protect themselves from these hazards
Personal Protective equipment or PPE are barriers that include what items?
mask
examination gloves
protective eyewear - face shield and eyewear with side shields
protective (impervious) clothing
the purpose of PPE is?
to provide barriers to minimize exposure to aerosols, spatter, direct and indirect contact
Aerosols are ?
invisible airborne particles; remain in the air for a while
Spatter is?
visible airborne particles of blood and or salvia; drop quickly to the floor, countertops, etc
direct contact occurs;
through direct touching of an infectious agent, saliva, or blood

example of indirect contact includes;
hand mirror
disinfectants do what?
kill or inactivate MOST pathogenic microbes, NOT spores
Properties of disinfectants include;
- rapid, broad spectrum antimicrobial- bactericidal, fungicidal, tuberculocidal, and virucidal
- odorless, easy to use, fast acting and economical
- compatible to environment and surfaces
- has residual effect which means works after it drys
- non toxic to touch or inhalation
- EPA registered
- cleans and disinfects
Types of disinfecting agents;
chlorine based compounds
iodophors
phenols
quaternary compounds
Chlorine based compounds are
corrosive to metals; strong odor
Iodophors;
can discolor some surfaces yellow
