Infection Control Flashcards
Sterile gloves
1) use gown’s sleeve cuffs as mitten & open glove pack
2) sterile glove has a fold at wrist where inside (exposed) of glove is not sterile
3) grasp R glove c L hand (still using sleeve cuff) & pull it on over open end of grown sleeve
4) first three fingers of R hand should reach under fold (touching sterile portion of L glove) & hold glove while L hand positions inside glove
5) once both gloves are donned, L glove can unfold R glove cuff
- – right bc i did all that in acute care..
Asepsis
Elimination of microorganisms that cause infection & creation of sterile field
Contamination
Area, surface or item coming in contact c something that is not sterile; assumes an environment that contains microorganisms
Hand washing
- important technique for sepsis
_ use warm water, remove all jewelry, wash hands c soap for30 sec, avoid touching contaminated surface, rinse thoroughly, use paper towel barrier when turning off water
Medical asepsis
Technique that attempts to contain pathogens to a specific area, object, or person
- a primary goal is to reduce spread of pathogens. Ex/ pt c TB is hospitalized & kept in isolation
Personal protective equipment (PPE)
- items are worn & used as barriers to protect someone who is assisting a pt c a potentially infectious disease
- includes gowns, lab coats, masks, gloves, goggles, spill kits, mouthpieces
Sterile field
- used to maintain surgical asepsis
- designated area that is considered void of all contaminants & microorganisms
Surgical asepsis
- state in with an area or object is s any microorganisms
- ex/ sterile field
