Infection Control Flashcards
Microorganism(microb)
Small living bodies that are not visible to the naked eye
Pathogens
Cause of infection and disease
Bacteria
One-called microorganism stat are classified by shape
Spores
Thick-walled cells created by bacteria to aid in reproduction and to make the bacteria resistant to harsh environments
Protozoa
Simplest organism in animal kingdom. Single celled microorganism but often exist in colonies
Fungi
Plant like microorganism stat can be found in the air, in soil, on plants,or in water.
Viruses
Smallest type of microorganism. Smaller than single cell made up of a few molecules
Endogenous infection
One that beings inside the body, such as a tumor
Exogenous infection
Caused by something outside the body, such as radiation or chemical solution
Nosocomial infection
Acquired by an individual within a health care facility
Infection control
Set of practices or procedures that will help to prevent the transmission of disease within a health care facility
Opportunistic Infections
Occurs when body’s defense system is weak
Infectious Disease
Results from an invasion of microorganisms
Communicable Disease
Type of infectious disease that can be transmitted from one person to another
Chain of Reaction
A set of conditions that must be met in order for a disease to be passed from one person to another
Reservoir
A place a causative agent to live and grow
Portal of exit
A way for agent to get out.
Mode of transmission
the means by which a pathogen is passed from one person to another
Portal of Entry
Place which pathogen will enter new reservoir
Susceptible Host
If new reservoir has weak defenses, it will contract the disease or infection
Airborne Transmission
Through droplets in a sneeze or cough
Bloodborne Transmission
Through blood or body fluids
Vectorborne Transmission
Through an outside source, such as mosquitoes and ticks
Sexual Transmission
Through sexual contact with an infected person
Foodborne Transmission
Through infected or contaminated foods
Casual Contact
By close body-to-body contact or sharing a person item, like a hairbrush or comb
Asepsis
A condition that is free from pathogens
Medical Asepsis
maintaining a clean enviroment in order to reduce the number of pathogens
Surgical Asepsis
Maintaining a sterile field
Sterile Field
Enviroment free from all microorganisms/spores
Sterilization
Highest level of asepsis (dry heat, gas, chemical solutions, pressurized steam)
Fomites
Any inanimate object that can harbor and transmit infectious agents
