Infection Control Flashcards
Microbes grow where?
Everywhere
Microbes consist of only pathogens; true or false?
False, pathogens and non-pathogens
What conditions need to be met for a microorganism to grow?
Dark, moist, warm on host/reservoir, nourishment and water
Do all microbes need air to survive?
No, some survive without air
What destroys microbes?
Heat and light
Signs of infection
Fever/chills, faster pulse, pain, tired, less appetite, puking, rash, redness, hurts to pee, drainage
Chain of transmission?
Infectious agent leaves host through portal of exit, means of transmission, enters portal of entry to infect host
Examples of portals of exit?
Respiratory, urinary, gastrointestinal, skin, reproductive, blood
Examples of portals of entry?
Broken skin, mucous membrane, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urine/genitals
What’s medical asepsis for?
Reducing spread of bacteria/microbes person-person and place-place
Definition of clean?
No pathogens, not visibly contaminated
Definition of contaminated?
Exposed to pathogens, visible and/or microscopic
Cleaning equipment instructions?
Depends on the facility’s protocols
What is PPE?
Personal Protective Equipment
How does a PSW maintain medical asepsis?
Change gloves and wash hands between patients, keep linens off floor, report signs of infection
