Infection And Response Topic 3 Flashcards
How do pathogens spread disease
Water, air, direct contact
What do viruses do and what is their effect
They move into cells and use the biochemistry of it to make copies of itself
This leads the cell to the cell bursting and releasing all of the copies into the bloodstream
The damage of the destruction of the cell makes the individual feel ill
What does bacteria do
They multiply very quickly through dividing by a process called binary fission
They produce toxins that can damage a cell
What do protists do?
Some are parasitic meaning they use humans and animals as their host (live on and inside causing damage)
What does fungi do?
They can either be single celled or have a body made of hyphae (thread-like structures)
They can produce spores which can be spread to other organisms
4 ways to limit the spread of pathogens
Improving hygiene, reducing contact with infected individuals, removing vectors, vaccinations
3 examples of viral diseases
Measles, HIV, tobacco mosaic virus
What are the symptoms of measles, how is it spread and how is it being prevented?
