Infection and response Flashcards
what are pathogens?
-microorganisms that cause infectious disease
-they spread communicable diseases
what are the four pathogens?
-bacteria
-viruses
-protists
-fungi
how do bacteria make us ill?
-once inside the human body, bacteria reproduce very rapidly
-release harmful chemicals called toxins
-toxins damage tissues, making us feel ill
how are bacteria different to viruses?
-viruses cannot reproduce by themselves - they can only reproduce inside a host cell
how do viruses damage cells, making us sick?
-virus invades host cell
-virus reproduces inside the host cell
-this is very damaging to the cell and when the virus leaves the cell it can cause the cell to burst open and die
what are three way pathogens are spread?
-in the air via water droplets (influenza).
-directly in water (e.g cholera)
-direct contact between individuals ( HIV)
what are 5 ways to reduce the spread of pathogens?
-washing your hands before eating
-providing people with clean drinking water
-using a condom during sexual intercouse (HIV)
-patients should be isolated
-vaccination
