What is HIV?
A retrovirus that attacks and causes destruction to T lymphocytes
What are risk factors for HIV?
IV drug use
multiple sex partners
multiple STI’s
How does HIV present in a pregnant mom?
fatigue, Influenza like
fever
diarrhea, weight loss
anemia
What laboratory tests are needed to determine HIV?
antibody screening test, enzyme immunoassay (EIA)
Confirmed by Western blot test or immunofluorescene assay
What do you do if a client is in labor to test for HIV?
HIV antibody test through blood and urine sample
What medications do you give for HIV?
Retrovir
When do you administer Retrovir?
At 14 weeks gestation and before the onset of labor or cesarean birth
To the infant at delivery and at 6 weeks following birth
What is important client education regarding HIV?
Advise client not to breastfeed
Safe sex practices
What is Torch?
Umbrella term covering toxoplasmosis, hepatitis, rubella virus, cytomegalovirus, and herpes
What are the consequences of Rubella during pregnancy?
miscarriage, congenital anomalies, and death
What are the consequences of HSV during pregnancy?
miscarriage, preterm labor, and intrauterine growth restriction
What are the risk factors for toxoplasmosis?
Raw or undercooked meat or handling cat feces
What are the risk factors for Rubella?
neonates who were born to clients who had rubella during pregnancy
What are the risk factors for cytomegalovirus?
droplet infection
latent virus can be reactivated causing disease to fetus in utero or during passage through the birth canal.
What are the risk factors for HSV?
direct contact with oral or genital lesions
fetus transmission greatest during vaginal birth
