Infection Flashcards
1
Q
Staph. aureus virulence factors?
A
- coagulase: local blood clot formation, limiting PMN access
- haemolysin: RBC osmotic lysis
- Panton-Valentine leukocidin: pore-forming toxin causing neutrophil lysis - abscess formation
2
Q
Antibiotics for MSSA and MRSA?
A
MSSA: flucloxacillin
MRSA: vancomycin
3
Q
C. difficile exotoxins?
A
- enterotoxin A - excessive fluid secretion (diarrhoea), inflammatory response and some cytopathic effect
- cytotoxin B - disrupts protein synthesis, cytoskeleton disorganisation
Both glycosylate and inactivate Rho-family GTP binding proteins.
4
Q
C. difficile gram stain appearance?
A
Gram positive rods
5
Q
Causative agent, presentation and management of infectious mononucleosis?
A
Organism = Epstein-Barr Virus
Presentation - classical trial: - fever - pharyngitis - cervical lymphadenopathy Can also present with headache, malaise and splenomegaly.
Management: avoid alcohol, take paracetamol
