Infection Flashcards
Contamination
-microbes on surface
-non replicating resident bacteria
-normal protection
Colonization
-microflora adhere to surface
-replicating
-don’t affect individuals
-normal
Critical Colonization
-amount of bacteria becomes abnormal
-adversely affects
-bioburden
-plateau of wound healing
-abnormal; but not defense from body
Infection
-microorganisms invade body
-host response
-decline in wound status
-amount of microbes does not determine infection
-decline in wound status with no explanation
-dolor is best indicator
-cannot determine w/o cultures
Infection Drainage
-increase with drainage
-may change color
-odor is not always an indicator
Biofilm
-found on most chronic wounds
-slimy barrier of proteins and sugar on the wound base
-must remove with debriedment
-attaches during critital col.
-usually with decreased immunity
-cultures or antibiotics don’t work
-increases inflammation
Wound Cultures
-gold standard is tissue biopsy
-swab is less painful, only tell surface (aerobic is standard, tracts use both)
Antiseptics
-cytotoxic but effective
-kill cells needed to heal
Hand Washing
10-15s
Nosocomial Infection
-developed while in hostpital
-payment may be withheld
Sterile Technique
-only in OR
-but can use technique
-clean gloves and equipment
-little suport for method
