Infection Flashcards
1
Q
Flucloxacillin
A
- Beta lactam, inhibiting cell wall synthesis
- Used against staph aureus and strep
- Used to treat skin, wound and bone infections
SE - nausea and vomiting
2
Q
co-amoxiclav
A
- Combination of clavulanic acid and amoxicillin (beta lactamase inhibitor and beta lactam)
- Beta lactase inhibits beta lactam ring, preventing resistance to amoxicillin
Used for - Treating UTI’s, skin infections, respiratory tract infections, bone and joint infections…
- against staph and e coli
SE - Most common include thrush, diarrhoea, nausea
3
Q
Vancomycin
A
- Glycopeptide and so acts on the cell wall, preventing making of peptidoglycan chains, inhibiting cross linking
- Bacterial cell wall is made of glycan strands that link together
- Used against - Clostridium difficle infection of the intestines (gram positive bacteria)
SE - Nausea
4
Q
Ceftriaxone
A
- Inhibits cell wall synthesis by binding to transpeptidase which are penicillin binding proteins (selective and irreversible)
- 1st line meningitis treatment
SE - can cause clostridium difficle infection, nausea and Gi irritations…
5
Q
Doxycycline
A
- Tetracycline drug, reduces bacterial ribosomes and so reduces protein synthesis, binding to Ca and Mg ions
- used for skin, chest and STI medication
SE - Can stain teeth, nausea, rashes, GI irritations
- Not used during pregnancy due to inhibition of folic acid synthesis (teratogenic)
