Supplementary fighting positions: guards against attack from directions other than those from which the main attack is expected. Does not cover the same sector of fire, provides security
What are the eight guidelines of clearing fields of fire?
1: do not disclose squads fighting position by excessive or careless clearing
2: when clearing start nearest fighting position and work forward to limits of affective small arms fire
3: leave thin natural screen of foliage to hide fighting position
4: in sparsely wooded areas, remove lower branches of large trees or remove entire trees
5: in heavy Woods, restrict work to thinning undergrowth and remove lower branches of large trees, clear narrow lane of fire for automatic weapons
6: demolish buildings and walls forward of fighting position which may obstruct fields of fire or provide cover/concealment to enemy
7: move cut brush too locations to not furnish concealment to enemy or disclose squads fighting position
8: fire team leader ensure fields of fire are cleared of obstructions which may cause premature definition of M203 projectiles

What is a rally point?
Easily identifiable point on ground, designated by patrol leader, provide cover and concealment/defensible for short time
What are the three types of rally points?
Initial: point within friendly area where patrol can reassemble if becomes disbursed before departing friendly area
En route: points selected along the patrols route to objective and from objective back to friendly lines
Objective colon. Nearest objective where patrol reassembles after mission accomplished. May also be used as final preparation point
What are the tactics used to react to an ambush?
Counter ambush drills
Near ambush: under heavy fire, Little time or space to maneuver. Immediately assault enemies position without waiting for order or signal. Be swift violent and distractive, fire weapons at maximum rate, throw hand grenades, yell as loud as possible. Men not in killing zone maneuver against ambush force. If force is small, destroy. If force is large Break contact and move to last rally point
Far ambush: under very heavy concentrated fire from great range, some cover permitted. Immediately return fire, take a best available cutter, continue firing until directed, maneuver against ambush force, break contact depending on rapid assessment of situation
What are the five types of patrols use five Marine Corps rifle squats?
Rapid patrols: destroy or capture enemy personnel/equipment, Destroy installations, free friendly personnel
Ambush patrols: Conduct ambushes of enemy patrols, carrying parties, foot columns, and convoys
Contact patrols establish and/or maintain contact with friendly or enemy forces
Economy of force patrols: Limited objective missions i.e. using and holding the terrain to allow maximum force is used elsewhere
Security patrols: detect infiltration by enemy, kill or capture infiltrators, and protect against surprise/ambush
