contraindications for breastfeeding
- mother infected with HIV, HTLV-1, HTLV-2
- mother with active, untreated TB
- mother with active herpetic breast lesions
- mother dependent upon illicit drugs
- mother taking chemo drugs or undergoing radiation

5 T’s:
- Truncus arteriosus (1 = 1 vessel)

result on triple screen suspicious for Down syndrome

life-threatening defects of Down syndrome
- cardiac defects: most common is endocardial cushion defect, followed by VSD and tetralogy of Fallot
- Duodenal atresia (in 12%) -> history of polyhydramnios, double bubble on plain film
characteristic of all Down syndrome infants
Hypotonia -> see slower feeding
newborn conditions associated with Down syndrome
- hypotonia
- hearing loss
- strabismus
- cataracts
- nystagmus
- congenital hypothyroidism
longer-term conditions associated with Down syndrome
- higher risk for leukemia
- obesity
- atlantoaxial instability (cervical spine)
- premature aging with Alzheimer disease
microcephaly, sloping forehead, cutis aplasia (missing part of skin and hair, polydactyly, microphthalmia, omphalocele, flexed and overlapping fingers
Trisomy 13 (Patau)
weak cry, single umbilical artery, micrognathia with small mouth and high arched palate, overlapped index finger over 3rd digit, rocker-bottom feet, short sternum
