Infancy: Physical Development Flashcards
3 key sequences of fetal development
cephalocaudal development, proximodistal development, differentiation
Cephalocaudal development
development from the upper part of the head to lower parts; head develops more rapidly than rest of body
Proximodistal development
development from the trunk outwards towards the periphery; brain/spinal cord develop due to necessity of nerves
Differentiation
behavior and physical structures become more specific and distinct
As children mature, physical reactions become
less global and more specific
Difference between neonate and toddlers response to stimuli
neonates thrash about the response to pain, but crying and withdrawing are still present
Most dramatic gains in height and weight occur during…
prenatal development

double birth weight
Weigh gains: 1st year
triple weight
Weight gains: 2nd year

Height gains: 1st year
