indwelling devices Flashcards
Types of Indwelling devices
Urinary catheters
Vascular access devices
Peripheral cannulas
Endotracheal tubes
Tracheostomies
Enteral feeding tubes
Wound drains
Urinary catheter
Tube that can be inserted into the bladder to help drain urine.
ANTT should be used
How can you insert a Urinary catheter
into urethra
Abdominal wall (suprapubic catheter)
Vesico-ureteric stents which are positioned during bladder surgery
IV cannula/ Peripheral IV
small tube through the skin and into vein.
Allows for administration of:
fluids
Medications
parenteral nutrition
IV Locations

What does VIP score stand for and what is it
V=visual
I=Infusion
P=Phlebitis
Its a tool used to monitor infusion sites, specifically where IV cannulas enter
Infusion phlebitis
accute inflammation of a vein due to IV therapy.
Occurs in two ways:
1. Mechanical (movement)
2. Chemical (drug or fluid)
Signs of phlebitis
- pain
- tenderness
- redness (erythema)
- bulging of the vein
Cannula care
should be removed if infected, cannula blocked or leakage of blood/fluid
VIP score 2 or more- cannula removed or replaced
If cannula removed should be documented
ANTT should be used
IV cannula checked daily
Cannula removal
- Follow local trust policy
- Should be removed if infected, blocked or is leakage.
- VIP score 2 or more should be removed or replaced
Other types of indwelling tubes
Central vascular access devices
placed in large veins for those who require frequent access to bloodstream.
Other types of indwelling tubes
Endotracheal tubes
catheter inserted into trachea through mouth or nose to ensure maintenance of patent airway and adquate gas exchange.
Other types of indwelling tubes
Tracheostomy
Tube inserted into the neck that heps you breath
Other types of indwelling tubes
Wound drains
Tube to remove puss, blood, other fluids from the wound.
