INDUSTRY THEORIES Flashcards
power and media industries - curran & seaton
media ownership is the most important influence on the media, with a small number of major conglomerates continuing to dominate the industry despite the emergence of the internet
C&S usefullness point and daily mail / guardian example
applies to the long history of press barons owning newspapers in order to achieve status and wield political power
examples: daily mail is a business past down generations of wealth, with a lord (lord rothermere) as the press baron, it follows the theory in that it is profit driven and dominate the industry owning lots of smaller news papers
C&S limitations point and daily mail / guardian example
the guardian challenges the theory in that it is an enterprise, reinvesting all profits back into the business, and is still just as successful as the daily mail and other conglomerates in the news industry
