What is industrial design?
”design of useful products meant for
mass production , with the aim to
adapt them to the human and her
surroundings”
What is aesthethics oriented?
Approaching a product from the “whole” to the parts
What is engineering oriented?

Explain Monö’s product triad
- The sides are:
- Communicative criteria: Criteria relating to the product ability to communicate with man i.e. to transmit a message and its adaptation to human perception and intellect
- Ergonomic criteria: The ergonomic criteria include everything that belongs to the design
adaptation to human physics and behavior in use t ex: handling, safety, cleaning, maintenance - Technical criteria: Criteria relating to the technical functioning of the product and its design, manufacture, etc.
Explain a product’s semantics
The product’s ability to communicate with humans is what we call the product’s semantic features.
The product character shall:
- describe the purpose, handling and mode of action »facts»
- express properties and quality (ex. sportig, mjuk, stabil)
- exhort to use and reaction (ex. ser tt en telefon är till för att hållas)
- identify product type, origin of the product, etc. of the product (ex. ser att lekasaker är leksaker)
