Class consciousness
An individual sense of class differentiation
What did factory workers constantly do?
They strove to cut cost, and make as much product as possible. Cut wages etc.
How were women perceived during this time?
Women were seen as delicate, and most men thought that their wives should stay as far away as they could from the hard working dirty factors. Women should stay at home in their proper roles.
Luddutes
A group of handcraft workers who attacked whole factories in northern England in 1812 and after, smashing the new machines that they believed were putting them out of work.
When did economic condition of workers change?
1850
What did Fredrich Engels believe?
That industrial poverty was worse than cotton poverty . These would later be embleshed by Karl Marx.
When did wages improve for workers in Europe, France I particular?
1840.
How were children treated in the factories?
The children would often be beaten if they messed up something in the factories.
How were the poorhouses?
Like tenant houses. Large brick buildings that were near the factories. Very unsanitary too. This increased the hatred towards factories.
Robert Owen?
A advocate for children. He stood up for children saying that working kids under the age of 10 is inhumane.
Factor act of 1833
English law that led to sharp decline in child labor in factories. Over 9 could work in factories. Any kids that are younger had to go to factory run elementary schools.
Seperate spheres
A gender division of labor with the wife at home and the husband as the wage earner.
Mines act of 1842
English law prohibiting underground work for women and girls and boys under the age of 10.
England’s changing views.
England outlawed unions and strikes. This favored caps list intrest. This combination law was bitterly resented an repealed and in 1824.
What was the Grand National Consolidated Trade Union?
This was Robwrt Owens Union. One of the largest founded. Demanded rights for workers.
