Industrial Revolution and Movement of People Flashcards
Who invented the Rotherham plough in what year?
Joseph Faljambe in 1730
Who invented the horse powered threshing machine in what year?
Andrew Miekle in 1784
Who invented the old steam engine in what year?

Major changes brought about by the industrial revolution
Medical advancements (longer lifespans), higher population, fresher crops, more crops due to better farming methods, movement from farm to cities, using children in the workforce and most importantly, the use of more machines, especially James Watt’s iteration of the steam engine.
How did Newcomen’s steam engine contribute to the industrial revolution?
Newcomen’s steam engine was capable of removing excess water from coal mines, which resulted in deeper coal mines and thus more coal to be obtained. This helped the coal mining industry take off.
How did Watt’s steam engine contribute to the the industrial revolution?
Watt’s steam engine had more continuous power making it more adaptable to be in more machines. It also got introduced the railway.
Where did the Industrial Revolution begin?
Great Britain
Difference between 3 field crop rotation system and 4 field crop rotation system.
The 3 field system had a cycle of wheat, barley and fallow/nothing (growing nutrients). The four field system had wheat, barely, turnips for feeding livestock instead of killing them and clovers for animals to graze upon with their manure helping the fertilisation.
Why was there a population explosion?
Eradication if the plague (black rats replaced by brown ones), child labour (families were encouraged to have more children so more could work), advancement of medicine and a surplus of crops due to new and better techniques, systems and machines.
Why was Great Britain the major trading nation?
They had colonies (raw materials), they surplus of items led them into a profitable cycle and their use of steam engines led to the production of new materials.
