What is an agrarian society?
An agrarian society is one whose economy is based on producing and maintaining crops and farmland
What made it more difficult for peasants to access land?
Restrictions imposed by landowners
What did the seed drill, triangular plough and four-crop rotation rotation system allow farmers to do?
They allowed farmers to sell crops as well as satisfying basic needs of villages, grow new crops and breed animals with better characteristics
Why did the invention of new technologies lead to improved productivity in the textile industry?
It allowed increased and more efficient productions and caused a dramatic increase in textile production
Why was the steam engine such an important advance in technology?
It allowed water to be pumped out of coal mines so more coal could be produced, was more efficient and powered larger machines with less fuel consumption
What were some negative impacts of the Industrial Revolution?
Indigenous populations were decimated, the horrible African slave system and the destruction of the natural environment
What are ‘isms’?
A distinctive practice, system or philosophy, typically a political ideology or an artistic movement
Before 1750, how were many European societies organised?
They were under the control of powerful monarchs and emperors, very hierarchical, there was a small wealthy land-owning class and a large, poor working class
What was the Industrial Revolution?
An enormous social, economical and cultural change brought about by the introduction of steam power in Britain, 1760
What did the Industrial Revolution change?
Every aspect of daily life, caused traditional economy to give way to capitalism and as strong middle class called bourgeoisie emerged in society
What happened as a result of the Industrial Revolution?
Many parts of the world came under the European imperialism control, egalitarianism suggested all people were equal and people began to build a sense of national identity
What were some of the negative effects of the Industrial Revolution?
The great economic disparities between the masses of factory workers living in overcrowded slums and those made wealthy by economic changes during the revolution
