A

Why were Children employed in factories?

A
  • Cheaper to employ
  • Easier to punish
  • Worked just as hard and for as long as adults
  • Children had to work because their families were poor
  • They didn’t have school
  • Their small size and agility meant they would do jobs adults couldn’t do e.g. fix machines
  • In 1821, approximately 49% of the workforce was under 20.

A

To improve conditions for children working in factories

  • No child workers under the age of nine
  • Children are not to work at night
  • Two hours schooling each day for children
  • Four factory inspectors appointed to enforce the law

What did people have to do to be a police officer?

A
  • Be male
  • Be able to read and write
  • Be over 6ft tall
  • Wear a blue uniform
  • (Blue = neutral. This was to symbolise that they were not violent like the army, who wore red)
  • Wear a truncheon and a rattle (they didn’t have guns!)
