When did the Industrial Revolution occur?
A
It occurred in Britain between 1750 and 1900.

What were Industrial towns like?
A
- Dirty
- overcrowded
- polluted
- lack of clean water
- diseases spread quickly
- low life expectancy
- high crime rates
- outside toilets.

Why were Children employed in factories?
A
- Cheaper to employ
- Easier to punish
- Worked just as hard and for as long as adults
- Children had to work because their families were poor
- They didn’t have school
- Their small size and agility meant they would do jobs adults couldn’t do e.g. fix machines
- In 1821, approximately 49% of the workforce was under 20.

Why was the Factory Act 1833 passed?
A
To improve conditions for children working in factories

What were some key points of the Factory Act 1833?
A
- No child workers under the age of nine
- Children are not to work at night
- Two hours schooling each day for children
- Four factory inspectors appointed to enforce the law

Who was the man who formed the Metropolitan Police Force?
A
It was formed by Sir Robert Peel.

What did people have to do to be a police officer?
A
- Be male
- Be able to read and write
- Be over 6ft tall
- Wear a blue uniform
- (Blue = neutral. This was to symbolise that they were not violent like the army, who wore red)
- Wear a truncheon and a rattle (they didn’t have guns!)
