What is strip farming?
This is when everyone in a city has two strip of land on either sides of a field and they can use it in any way they want to.
What are advantages of strip farming?
Everyone in the village has land
There is a sense of community because people can help each other
There is a sense of equality because everyone has the same amount of land
What are disadvantages of strip farming?
If you have land next to someone who is keeping animals the animals might wander onto your land and eat your crops.
Neighbours weeds might grow into your strip
Time is wasted travelling between your strips.
People struggle to grow lots of crops to create a surplus.
What is a turnpike trust
A turn pike trust is a group of people who look after roads, they create a small tax so if people want to use the roads they have to pay some money, with this money the trust would use it to fix roads by filling in pot holes.
Why did farmers like the turnpikes
Yes they did because the crops he is brining to the market needs to stay fresh and if the turnpike trust are filling in pot holes the road will be smother so the cart can move faster.
What is negative for a farmer using the turnpikes
If the farmer does not have the money to use the road he will not be able to sell his food at the market.
How are canal boats helpful
Coal could be delivered to heat homes and run steam engins
They can take very heavy loads.
It was cheaper
They could deliver very fragile materials.
It was faster than a turnpike in long distances.
What are the bad things about a canal boat.
It was slower than a turnpike in the short term
It could not take people
Canals would freeze up in the winter and dry out in the summer so you could only use canal boats in two seasons.
Why would farmers prefer canals boats to turnpikes
Because it is cheaper
Because on the road you could take 1 ton per 10 miles but on a canal you can take 2 tons per 20 miles

What were disadvantages of the domestic system
Production was very slow. If any machinery broke you could not work until you bought another one.
Reasons for why people thought it was ok to employ children
They did not need a big income so money was saved
They are small so they can get to places adults cannot.
They might be earning the only income for the family.
