Indus Basin Irrigation System (IBIS) Flashcards
What is the IBIS
An important water source for the NEEs of India and Pakistan
Largest continuous irrigation system in the world
3 large dams and 100+ small dams regulate water flow
64 000km of smaller canals distribute water to rural areas
Advantages of IBIS
Improved food security for Pakistan
Provides water for over 1.6 million km of agricultural land
Increased crop yields, 36% more rice, 39% more wheat
Improved diets as more food available
Agricultural industries improved
Disadvantages of IBIS
Inequalities due to some farmers taking more water
High summer temperatures mean water lost through evaporation
Water is wasted, salinisation causes long term damage to soil
Population growth increases demand
High costs to maintain
