Inductive and Deductive Reasoning Flashcards
What is deductive reasoning?
Deductive reasoning is proving a statement by reasoning from accepted postulates, definitions, theorems, and given informtion. Conclusions must be true if hypotheses are true!
Ex. Statement: All ninth grade students hate math.
Therefore if Anna is a ninth grader, she must hate math.
Some statements don’t have a deduction or conclusion because there is no new info to conclude.
Ex. Valarie is older than Greg. Dan is older than Greg.
What is inductive reasoning?
Inductive reasoning is the conclusion is based on several past observations. Conclusions are probably true, but not necessarily true.
Ex. 3, 6, 12, 24, (48) or 11, 15, 19, 23, (27) or 5, 6, 8, 11, 15, (20)
