Object of the game (2)
- to send the ball over the net and Na e it either land in the floor in the opponent’s court or deflect off a member of the opposing team
- to prevent the ball from landing on the floor in your court or selecting off a member of your team
Team composition
Each team plays with 6 players on a court (3 along the net and 3 in the back row)
Playing the game (4)
-the ball is out in ‘play’ with a service over the net to the opponent side
-each team has a max. of 3 contacts before returning the ball to the opposing team
-players cannot hit the ball twice in succession
-a ‘rally’ continues until:
~the ball lands on the floor in the opponents court
~the ball is hit out of bounds
~the ball is deflected by a player and cannot be returned
Serving (3)
- the server must serve from behind the service (end) line and must not have his/her foot on the court until after contact
- balls may be served overhand or underhand
- the served ball may graze the net and drop to the other side for a point
Scoring (3)
- Teams winning a rally score 1 point, regardless of who is serving
- when a receiving team wins a rally, it gains a point and the right to serve. The teams players must rotate one position clockwise before serving
- a set is won by the team which first scores 25 points (the winning team must lead by 2 points). A game is best 2 out of 3 sets

Bump
Description: a two handed hit of the volleyball using the forearms
Purpose: used to receive serves
Volley (aka set)
Description: a two handed hit above the head using fingertips
Purpose: to set up a player to hit (spike) the ball
Spike
Description: running and jumping hit of the ball using one hand
Purpose: to hit over the net into “empty space” in opponent’s court
Block
Description: a two-handed jump directly in front of the net
Purpose:to block an opponent’s spike
Ace
When the ball is served to the other team and no one touches it
Sideout
When the team that served the ball makes a mistake, causing the back to go to the other team
Dig
When a player makes a save from a very difficult spike
