- lack of reliability - people wont respond in the same way on different days - answers depend on the day they are asked
- relies on self-reporting measures and people might give false answer
- people might give answers that they believe are expected of them

- if theory is correct, criminal behaviour would be detectable in childhood and intervention can be implemented to give treatment and reduce crime
