what is meant by the cooperative principle
describes how people acheive effective conversational communication in common social situations
- accept and understand one another
maxim of quality
= tries to be truthful and doesn’t give information that is false or not supported by evidence
maxim of quantity
= one tries to be as informative as possible and gives as much information as needed
maxim of relation
= one tries to be relevant, talks about things pertinent to the discussion
maxim of manner
= one tries to be clear, brief and orderly, avoiding any obscurity or ambiguity
- ensure langauge use is appropriate and direct
breaking the maxims
violating = breaking the maxim covertly so other people dont know, resulting in lying flouting = break the maxim in a flagarant way - often foregrounded - so that it is obvious it has been broken - refers to the implicature - extra meaning
politeness principle
= redressing of affronts to a persons sociological ‘face’ threatening acts
- builds on concept of face to discuss politeness as a response
