Individual Rights: Sources of Power Amendment 1 - 10 [Bill of Rights]
Applies directly only to federal government
applied to states and local governments through DUE PROCESS provisions of the 14th A, except:
2nd - Right to Bear Arms
3rd - Right to not have soldiers quartered in person’s home
5 - Right to grand jurt indictment in criminal cases
7- Right to jury in civil cases
8- Right against excessive fines
13th A
Prevents badges of slavery and involuntary servitude.
Also applies to private actions by individuals [versus states in 14th A]
14th A
Prevents states (v. individuals in the 13th A) from depriving any person of life, liberty or property without due process and equal protection.
14th A doesn’t apply to the feds, EP does but through the 5th A
15th A
prevents both fed and state govs from denying a citizen the right to vote bc of race
