Q

What is a critique of Ekmans 6 basic emotions?

A

Why even have basic emotions? (Ortony & Turner, 1990).

In a mental imagery task, the representations are not universal (Jack et al., 2012).

Q

What does essentialism think about the basic six emotions?

Q

What does the adaptationist model assume about the development of emotions?

A

Assumes that the development of emotions are due to evolutionary fitness. (Buss et al., 1992). E.g., Disgust, infections and disease are a threat to us so we avoid them.

Q

What is the James Lange Theory?

A

Emotion is a sense making activity for physiological sensations. The feeling of bodily changes as they occur is the emotion-the associational and motor elements (Cannon, 1927).

Q

What is the social constructivist perspective?

A

Emotion as the social correction/signal (Averill, 1982).
The experience of being out of control is an interpretation we place on our behaviour. More properly it is an interpretation that our culture places on our behaviour. Most importantly, culture provides the content of the appraisals that generate emotions. While the process of appraisal may be a biological adaptation, the content of our appraisals is cultural. (Cornelius, 2000).

Q

Why is it assumed that baroreceptor activity will influence the processing of emotional stimuli?

A

Close relationship between physiological signals and emotional states (James-Lange Theory). Heart rate changes in response to emotive stimuli (Critchley et al., 2005). Baroreceptor regulates BP.

17
Q

Give a brief overview of Garfinkel et al., (2014) evaluation of fear experiment?

A

Detection and experience of fear changed by signals from individual heartbeats.Changes activity in brain regions involved in fear responses and feelings. Not everyone shows this effect, 5/20 have no effect, 8/20 have strong effects.

18
Q

What evidence is there that Leganes-Fonteneau et al (2020) results are task dependent?

A

Emotional attentional blink to aversive stimuli. Biased to positive stimuli, inhibition of fear stimuli.

19
Q

What do constructionists say about emotions?

A

Emotions are biological processes that are used to construct meaning in a moment and at a time.

20
Q

What method issues are there in Barrett et al., (2020) study?

A

Pls are asked to infer emotional meaning in posed, rather than spontaneous facial configurations.
Ps are asked to infer emotional meaning in static, nonmoving facial configurations.
also in exaggerated faces.
Only 1 task sued in most experiments.
