Individual Differences Flashcards
What is locus of control?
The reasons people give for what happens to them-personality.
What is external control and internal control?
What Evidence is there to do with this?
External control:believes that what happens to them is outside of their control.
Internal control:they are in control of their own actions.
There is evidence that those with an internal locus of control are more willing to resist obeying, but evidence for this is not strong enough so therefore more research is needed to link personality to obedience.
What did Adorno believe about personality?
He believes that personality was the best explanation of obedience. Someone with an authoritarian personality is more likely to be obedient and or be prejudiced.
What type of characteristics might someone with an authoritarian personality have?
Very conscious of status
Submissive attitude towards authority figure
Rigid belief in conventional values.
General hostility towards other groups
Preoccupations with power and toughness
Has to be ambiguous.
What did Adorno believe about strict parents?
They were rife in Germany at the start of the 20th century. This meant that Germans has personalities that were submissive to authority, but harsh towards those considered inferior.
What did Adorno believe about permissive parenting styles?
That a more permissive parenting style centred around unconditional love might result in adults who score low of the f scale, and are more likely to show resistance and defy what they perceive to be destructive orders.
Scores on the f-scale
9 or more-external locus of control
8 or less-internal locus of control
