What is indirect speech?
A reported version of what someone said.
e.g: Jane said that she wouldn’t be able to come to the party the following evening.
Change the following sentence into indirect speech.
“If you enjoy helping animals, you should try volunteering at the SPCA.” The receptionist said.
The receptionist said that if I enjoy helping animals, I should try volunteering at the SPCA.
What do you do to a direct sentence to make it into indirect speech?
Take away “ and “ at the beginning and end of the sentence. Also add ‘that’ or ‘if’.
Change the following sentence into indirect speech.
“Try your absolute best in this spelling bee, you can do it!” the teacher said.
The teacher said that I must try my absolute best in this spelling bee, and that I can do it.
Change the following sentence into indirect speech in past tense.
“I am getting new jeans for the party,” said Katrina.
Katrina said that she was getting new jeans for the party.
Change the following sentence into indirect speech in past tense.
My dad said, “The surprise will be here soon.”
My dad said that the surprise would be there soon.
Change the following sentence into indirect speech in past tense.
“I bought my mother a plant for Christmas,’’ said Kim.
Kim said that she had bought her mother a plant for Christmas.
